“I’m sorry she’s not hanging on you, man.” Justin wiped his forehead with the sleeve of his shirt. He’d changed right after their set, but the club was packed. He couldn’t cool off. “She’s got it in her head to find us new collaborators before we leave Austin.”

“She’s smart.” Carlo ran a hand down each arm, smoothing his shirt. “Don’t worry. I’ve been paying attention. When she has moments by herself, I seize them.” Carlo didn’t look at Justin; instead, his gaze darted around the club. “Ah, maybe I’m about to get another. She’s stopped.” Carlo pushed through the crowd toward Sue.

Justin didn’t envy Carlo. He wiped his head with his shirt again to make sure his deodorant hadn’t failed. The humid club reeked; the smell was so pervasive Justin worried it had rubbed off on him. No way would he be confident going after a woman if he thought he stank. He mentally gave Carlo points for dedication, then turned and accepted a pen and CD when someone asked for a signature.

“Love your drumming, man,” the guy said as Justin scribbled his name on the liner notes.

“Thanks.” As Justin handed back the CD, the woman from that afternoon came up beside him and hugged him.

“Great show, Justin.”

He smiled. “Hey! Glad you made it. Want a drink?”

“Yeah!”

“Justin!”

He looked up, searching out Carlo. He lifted his eyebrows when he caught Carlo’s eye, only a few feet in front of him.

Carlo waved. “Come here!”

The woman sneered. “Always this guy. Seriously?”

Justin smiled. “Cut him some slack. He’s trying to date my friend. Come on.” He wove their fingers together, keeping her by his side.

When Justin got to him, Carlo pointed his chin at Sue. “There.”

She talked with some guy—tall, broad shoulders, didn’t look sweaty—his hand resting on her hip as she leaned against him, tapping on a phone she held against his upper arm. She smiled a deep, warm smile. When she stopped tapping, she didn’t step out of his embrace. She slid the phone down the guy’s arm, never breaking contact as she put it against his hand. He stopped touching her long enough to shove the phone into his pocket. Then he reached for her hand, playing with her fingers as he talked into her ear. When she answered, she pulled her shoulders closer to him.

Justin thumped his foot. “That’s the guy.”

Carlo nodded.

Mother fuck. Justin had set Sue up with Carlo because Brad wouldn’t interfere. But some guy with decent hair and no pit stains in this dank ass club shows up and turns her head? Brad would see it as a challenge. Hell, Sue’s lack of interest in Carlo was the perfect excuse to go after her. Justin’d seen Brad do some sneaky shit to win over girls. Why the fuck couldn’t Sue fall for Carlo?

“Lemme buy you a drink, man.”
